Her brother had labelled every box in the house. Kitchen. Attic. Do not open.

Inside the last one: forty-one letters, unopened, in their mother’s hand.

She sat down on the floor and did the arithmetic twice.

The postmarks ran from the year before she was born to the spring she arrived.

She had not planned to open anything. She had planned to be back on the motorway by four.

The attic light did not work. She used the torch on her phone and it made the room smaller.

There was no note with them. There was never going to be a note.

The house sold in November, and the winter came in before the buyers did.

Her brother had labelled every box in the house — kitchen, attic, Mum.

In the attic she found forty-one letters, postmarked from a city neither of them had ever named.

The handwriting was her mother’s, and her mother had been dead nine years.

She did the arithmetic on the floor, twice, and liked neither answer.

She told her brother nothing.

    Chapter ninethe brother’s chapter

He told the story the way he always told it, with the furniture in the wrong rooms. She let him finish, because correcting him would have meant explaining how she knew. Outside, the removal van took the last of the kitchen.

When it was gone he said the house looked bigger. She said nothing to that either, and the winter came in through the open door as though it had been waiting on the step.
